It is "sloopy" not "snoopy" and the song came about when Ohio State was having a tough year and lost to Michigan badly. I think it was written in the "hop Along" Cassidey days.

Bands can play some pretty goofy songs at times. Besides, it's "sloopy," not "snoopy," I believe. I don't like it, either.

"Hang on Sloopy" was a popular song in the 60's, done by "The McCoys" (just for people's information).
