They can burn a long time depending on diameter. The trick to good candle burning is a appropriate size candle burner. It help contain the melted wax and last longer. When you light a candle, always allow it to burn long enough that the total top is melted wax. If you not do this they try to do the burn down the middle and leave the sides stuff. Formal candles are for looks at a Table for Dining and they just let the wax run down and burn fairly fast compared to mood/atmosphere type candles. Also, be careful, some burners may crack and break from the heat. If, you not trust a Burner, put it in something fire safe that catch and contain the wax. I use like a metal jar lid and on top of a coffee cup holder if on wood to isolate the heat if it should try to break the burner. This a basic explain, get to burning and you figure it out.

ok, first stating the obvious smaller candles burn faster and bigger ones take longer to use up.
lets see no certain colour burns faster but beeswax takes a LONG time to burn up so do fancy designs and decor- I have a candle made in the shape of a star and covered in glitter and I've had it for years but regular candles burn faster
I hope this makes sense and you can see where I'm comming from I use candles all the time

Usually the cheaper candles will burn up very quickly.
When purchasing candles, they sometimes have info on how many hours they will burn. That is all I know by my own expierience with them.
