well, how cold? if you mean that when it's VERY cold outside...like 20 degrees F or lower, and you start the truck and put it in gear and hit the gas, and it dies, then that is normal. this isn't a problem at all, you just need to let the truck warm up for about 10 seconds. the problem is too much cold air is getting into the engine, which will cause it to jerk and die. hope i helped.

There's a number of things it could be. I suggest taking it to a shop and let them put an analyzer on it to pin point the problem. If it's over due for a tune up it may need several things. Check your air filter first, if it's really dirty it can't get the right amount of air into the engine.

Also make sure your tires are fully inflated, this wont help it run better but it will help your gas mileage.
