That happens to me a lot in class... I give the wrong answer and others laugh because I'm supposed to be Salma, the smart girl... arg... It gets annoying!

If/when they laugh, why not pop off something like "Hey, I'm just trying to give the rest of you a chance."
The important thing is to be able to laugh at yourself. It really doesn't matter what other people think of you as long as you are happy with yourself.

Just tell them, Hey I was just testing you.. to see if you can spot the mistake.
Ok that was lame.
But really, they're just jealous. They feel triumphant when they see a smart person fall from grace at some point of time, giving them this wondrous, short-term feeling that perhaps they are smarter than you after all. But then, they snap back to reality and will realise that, hell nah, I can never be as smart as Salma. They get jealous all over again and they look forward to the next time you make mistakes so that they can laugh louder than the last time they laughed at you.
Feel good about yourself girl, especially since you know you have the brains... they're just being their brainless selves.
And yes, people laugh at me when I make mistakes as well, being the miss-smarty-pants that I can be lol.

I teach ESL kids and when I try to speak Spanish, my students laugh at me if I say something wrong. I don't mind. I hope that I am showing them that it's okay to make mistakes when learning another language and that they shouldn't be afraid to try. What is important is being able to communicate even if you don't speak the language perfectly.

Back when I was a student, I too was "the smart girl" and if I made a mistake the other kids laughed at me. You're right, it is annoying. But nobody can be right 100% of the time. Keep on answering; we learn from our mistakes. Your classmates who laugh are probably too afraid to answer themselves.

I certainly laugh at my own mistakes so I hope so. Look at all the brilliant people who weren't elected for one reason, they were bad on tv. That's one reason why it can be so important to join a club to gain that all important speaking ability. One other bit of free advice I give out all the time. Learn to do shorthand in school. Its all important in college. The reason is a lot of professors won't slow down lectures and tape recorders don't always help. Take my advice, learn shorthand for fast note taking for school and college!

Don't pay any attention to them Mis, they are just jealous...and oh yeah I have gotten a laugh a time or two myself...all those pass tho because if you are right most of the time the few times you are wrong do not matter in the long run...

sometimes. but depending on the mistake (non life threatening types) i laugh at my own mistakes and encourage others to share in it. no one is that smart that they don't have a off moment and brain fizzle.

Sometimes....there was this one time in the fourth grade where that happened to me. I don't remember what it was that I did, but I was laughed at, and I remember running to the bathroom in tears....I hear where you're coming from, with all my heart :)
