It can happen but doesn't always.
I don't think it's a myth.
I do however believe that some people don't have it.

Depends on the person. With the increase in self centered follower types (don't ask me how both are posible,... I guess bad examples of humans are around them all the time) it's becomeing less and less likely to happen.
Although people are more able to put on an act.
For example, I was standing in line for a couple hours (a store was going out of business,.. you can't beat 75% off everything) and I was listening to a woman on her Cell Phone ranting. Her and her friends have children,.. they expect them to be mindless and not speak because they are not Humans yet,.. and she was ranting because her and her friends listen to rap all the time and when a rap song came on one of their children started singing to it even though it was suggestive and might have had curseing,... her mind couldn't understand: 1. Why he was singing suddenly instead of being a mindless doll. 2. How he knew the lyrics. 3. Why he was singing something so inappropriate. They expect to drag their kids around by the arms like sacks of potatoes, too.
So the Maternal Instinct is dwindleing. There is more then one Maternal thing, too. Like the story of women who can lift a car to save their baby. When problems come up where I live,.. they wander away from the baby and rant about them selves.
This may posibly be over blown by people around me being idiots but I know it's truw outside of this area, too... posibly not as big a problem yet.
There is one other thing to consider,.. Post Partem Depression. Everyone I've known to have a baby in the last 3 years has had atleast a few days of that,... which isn't so normal. It is normal but not at these numbers. Might be another case of the area I live in. Anyways,.. it is something that can permenantly cancel out Maternal Instincts in SOME women (they don't get over it some times).

No. It exists in both males and females. It exists in most species. Remember that gorilla that scooped up that toddler that fell into the pit? She cuddles him until rescue workers were able to retreive him.....maternal instinct is so closely related to empathy that it's hard to tell.

No it is not, Women, Mothers have that and some men do to.
I think it is one of those senses humans have that needs to be learned and honed to be properly executed.
Ever been by yourself and all of a sudden you feel some one is present. Didn't hear them or see them, but you feel them and then you discover them there.
It's a God give sense that canot be explained.

it is an instinct, because every person for example believes that there is a God that watches us all, but it is the person who should develop this instinct.
