When we got hit by the ice storm, a chicken found it's way into my apartment building. It's actually a multicolered chicken and is quite beautiful. I've waited for signs to go up in my neighborhood in case it's someone's pet, but haven't seen anything or heard anything. By the way, the Humane Society won't bother with it. Any ideas?

The Humane Society doesn't have to deal with it. They're only obligated to consider PETS. And even if it is a pet, you can't prove that to them.

Your local animal control does, though. If it's not in your phone book, call the police station and ask for that department. If you're in a rural area, they might refer you to an agricultural organization, since it's a farm animal. If not, they'll take it. It might actually be illegal to own a chicken inside your city limits ... and it's certainly not legal to keep it in an apartment building.

If the animal control is anything like mine, they'll try to pass you off to something like Wildlife and Fisheries. But it's NOT wildlife. Don't let them do that.

If the Humane Society has a contract to provide animal control, like in some cities, they have to take it unless there's a provision in their contract that allows them to refuse animals. If there's a clause like that you're allowed to leave it with the police, since the responsibility defaults to them.

Call animal control or your local shelter, as in, the pound. People turn in chickens at our shelter often. And I live in suburbs.

We consistently had hens (unfastened selection) whilst i replace into growing to be up. Hens will lay single eggs and depart them and not employing a concept. those eggs are oftentimes no longer fertile. although that modifications whilst the fowl is going Broody. You knew whilst a fowl replace into going broody because of the fact she could supply up laying in the fowl-homestead nest packing boxes and decide a hidden nest website someplace and lay a take carry of of eggs that are fertile over assorted days. those she could then take a seat on (incubate) till they hatched. whilst a fowl is guarding a take carry of of eggs she gets very aggressive and protecting. one among my chores as a baby replace into watching for hens doing this and shop a watch on them till they hatched. We had a fowl coop on wheels which we could place close to the place the fowl replace into, being careful to no longer disturb her or she could abandon the nest. It replace into significant to be there whilst the eggs hatched so shall we get the fowl and her chicks in the coop so predators (foxes, rats and hawks) could desire to no longer get the chicks. just take it to your local animal rescue,.tell them that it's a lost pet.there they can take care of it and keep the pets picture on their website so that the pets owner can find it.just keep putting up flyers saying that you took them to that animal shelter so that the owner will know where to look.

Do you have any local or near by dairy farms? They are usually pretty good about taking in small farm animals. Good Luck.
