pattons 7th army took palermo first it was bombarded by flying fortress' and then the 7th came in...made up primarily of marines light artillary and light armoured units and a few shermans

Patton is most famous as a tank commander, so I would assume that they were mostly armored units.

I don't know. An Army is made up of infantry, armor, and support units. I'd have to say much of it was armor.
