Cheeep and easy---use fertilizer, it won't hurt your wood or your yard---10 10 10 works perfect---get it at any Home Depot etc. a big bag will melt ice or snow even if there is no sun, unlike the spendy ice melt that kills all it touches. Just sprinkle on and the bag should last all winter---depending on the area you are treating.

Maybe for the winter you should install some kind of treads,(aluminum thread plate) and then you could use salt to keep from freezing, or check and see if they make some type of heater that you put on the underside of the step to keep it warm and melt the ice. Check your local hardware stores, I am sure they have something , or a better suggestion. Good luck.

You can keep them from icing up with salt. Clean the snow off, and sprinkle some rock salt (you can get it most anywhere) on your steps. The ice will melt quickly, and you won't slip. If it rains, re-apply salt after rain stops to prevent re-freezing.
