Can emotional intimacy trump physical contact?

Perhaps it can. Having a sense of extreme emotional closeness can make life seem technicolor, full of life, beats, color. Having only the physical can provide the rhythm of the heat but not much else.

In youth, the physical contact is priority. Intimacy grows with nourishment of the basic relationship. Over time, the emotional bond takes precedent or equals physical intimacy. In older people, especially those with health issues or disabilities, the emotional intimacy may trump the physical contact.

Possibly. Either one can be very satisfying. But the ideal is both combined. Physical contact emphasizes the emotional intimacy. Many emotions that can not be expressed orally or in writing can be expressed far better with a simple look or a touch.
It worked with us as children. It works just as well as adults.
So to answer your question. I think we need both. I think we have to have both.

Yes, and I'm living proof.

My love comes from a history of severe child abuse, a lot of it sexual. We've been together for 8 years now. We snuggle a lot, we hold eachother, we hold hands and kiss....and we do have sex, don't get me wrong....it's just that the sex is few and far between. We prefer to say it's a matter of quality over quantity.

We are very close emotionally, and there has been major progress in the physical intimacy part. It just takes time, love and understanding.

No I don't think it can. People , like infants need physical contact to thrive and feel good about themselves.

it could be possible when two ppl are far apart & can only communicate by the likes of this site.but if they met then it would probably be a different story
