The rhythm of the universe and all of life could have a more intimate touch upon thought and heart . that's a start. It's absolutely beautiful!

I was actually part of retreat that took away our cell phones, watches and alarm clocks so that we would not know what time it was. I was a very freeing experience. Freeing in the sense that I did not have to worry about where I had to be next. We were all able to focus on what really mattered in life and focus on our relationships with other. I do not think life without watches or schedule would make us truly free as you ask up here. The reason for this is that life without time does not mean that we will not be bound by something else.

These are external impositions . There are other naturally programmed watches and schedules for the human ( body). Hunger. Thirst. Puberty. menopause.death....... We would never be totally free from these schedules. And why should we be?

The man made watches and schedules help only in overriding the naturals. You want to do too many things in too short a time . Eat too fast to work more to earn more to buy more food to eat well and leisurely. There is contradiction all the time.

What is the meaning of freedom? People are always wishing if only they are 'free' to do this or that. Believe it or not, there is total and complete freedom in life. It is not wanting to be responsible for the consequences which cause us not wanting to do certain things. No one can stop a person from jumping off the 10th floor, but does any one want to become a heap of broken flesh and bones? You don't have to go to work, provided you are willing to go hungary. You can commit any crimes, provided you are willing to bear the punishment meted by the court, should you get caught. The terrorists were free to ram the planes into WTC because they were willing to die for it. Yes, there is absolutely total freedom. Every time some one complains of not being free to ...means, she/he is not willing to face the consequences of his/her action. If there are no watches or schedules, or may I add, no day or night, you will still come to a set rhythm for everything. Watches and schedules are mere means of making things convenient for every body. But with them in place, society will have to develop a fitting rhythm.

This brings in the question of time really. I like the idea of eating when we're hungry, sleeping when we're sleepy, working when we want to work, etc etc. I think that lifestyle is not typical of today's society and don't think it would typically work in western society, because of our culture. I think other cultures could be more suited to a life without watches or schedules, but when we live in a society that focuses on working for an employer, going to school at an institution, scheduled entertainment, etc you need to know what time it is and what schedule you are on.

I almost said that it is because of our focus on work, children, religion and so on, but it does not take away from those other cultures that focus on the same thing and could be suited to a non-scheduled lifestyle.

I don't know if we would be truly free...time creates structure. Although it is a man made device, it is necessary to aid in modern life. But if time would have never been invented at all, everything would be different. To start, our vocabulary - all words related to dates, times, and years would be illuminated. Also anything involving modern business. The invention (and maturation) of time helped to propel the Industrial Revolution. All modern business and production spurred from that era.

Ummm, chaos I think. We would still need to get things done to live, and not being able to organize with others would be difficult. Even before watches, people refered to time by looking at the sun. I think we would be truly lost.

It would be a lot less stressful and I don't think we would here too much about anxiety disorders anymore. Think about the pressure of keeping a schedule hell its called a "DEADline" for christ's sake.

Do you want to be free of life? Life is time, time is life. Without each other, it's meaningless.
