well, first of all, i'd ask them why they know what dying cats sound like.....

but, something like that is an opinion, not everyone likes the same kind of stuff when it comes to music.

listen to the voices of different singers in different styles and see whats out there, the guy from Pantera is revered for being great at what he does, and so is the guy from Queen, and they have totally different voices and would sound horrid doing the wrong music.

as a guitar teacher, one thing i see a lot of ppl do (whether its a voice, or playing an instrument) is trying to be something they're not. dont try to sing like your favorite singer, because you're not them. ppl get used to singing along with a CD, so they're hearing their own voice + the voice on the disc. practice on your own, and dont sing beyond what you can do (dont try to hit super high notes if you cant, dont try to get raspy if you cant, dont try to do really fast vibrato if you cant, etc.)

hit your local music store and ask about voice lessons. it never hurts to ask questions and see what you can learn from someone.

If a lot of people think you sing like a cat dying then who thinks you have a great singing voice?

If you love to sing keep singing - who cares what other people think --- just don't plan on being famous (William Hung was a FLUKE).

Singing lessons might help - but sing for the love it either way.

A) Assuming you have talent:
Either they don't appreciate your talent or they're teasing you.

B) Assuming you don't have talent:
Then your perception of your voice isn't the same as others. Watch American Idol and you'll see a lot of people who think they're great but aren't. Listen to a recorded version of your voice to hear yourself the way others do.

C)Sing anyway if you enjoy it. Just don't expect everyone to love it.

Contact a person or company that is involved in the recruitment of new singers you should be able to find them in the phone book under (vocal coaches/talent agents) and get their unbiased opinion.Maybe you do have what it takes and maybe you don't. They will be able to tell you yes or no honestly. But be prepared to accept a no decision if it happens. But if you don't try and you do have the talent either raw or ready to go you will have that question unanswered in the back of your mind for the rest of your life.IN MY OPINION GO FOR IT WHAT'S THE WORST THAT THEY CAN TELL YOU "NO YOU DON'T HAVE THE TALENT" But if you do have what it takes and you become a star I request a thank you in the credits of your first album and a autographed copy.

You should record several of your "best" songs, then sit and listen to them objectively. Then have a friend or two sit with you and listen, then ask them to critique your singing. If you are good, they will tell you, If they are good friends, they will be honest. Then let a few people you don't know well listen, and get their views. Good luck.

Depends on what song you sing...or, you call them to sing it for you...you rate their singing as a cat dying...I was rated 70%....I do have a friend who thinks she sing so well, but, her singing sucks man.....out of tune!

I'd listen to the public. Its the public that buys cds and goes to concerts. If you really believe that you can sing then check out a vocal coach. If they can't help you, then learn to play the gee-tar.
