On old vessels, the steering board was on the right, so they came up to the dock in port on the left side. This is where port and starboard came from. To remember, face the bow, and the port is the left side(same number of letters, and red for port has fewer letters). The right or starboard is signified by a green light. All of these have more letters.

Everyone left out.Vessels are lit as port side is red, starboard is green. An easy way to remember this is port, red, left all have the least amount of letters. Starbord, right, green all have the most.

Standing at the helm (steering wheel) Your left is Port, Your right is Starboard. Just remember that Port and Left have the same number of letters in them, that'll help greatly.
Off topic, thank heavens it ain't Starboard and Larboard ('olde' form of Port) any more. :)

Port wine is red in colour so it is easy to remember that the light on the left hand side of the ship or port side is red and the one on the right or starboard side is green.

when you are standing on the fantail looking forward on you left is port and on the right is starboard. When you are on the ship it self it is easy to remember which is which due to port is always even. Starboard is always odd, trick to remember is to count the letters in each word. 4 in port and 9 in starboard.

The mental aide for me when I first joined the Navy was left has fewer letters as does port. Always facing forward. Like in a car left side is as if you are driving.

When setting at the helm or wheel , left is port, right is starboard. easy way to remember short words go together and long words go together. You will find that the helm or wheel is always on the starboard side.

Exactly, the key is "face the front of the boat" and then port is left, starboard is right. One reason the are referred to as "port" and "starboard" are so that no one is confused about what is meant if facing aft!
