The most popular way of building games for the web, is to build them in "Flash". Flash was originally made by a company called Macromedia, who are (or rather were) the most popular web design software manufacturers. You may have heard of programs such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Freehand...all of these are made by Macromedia. However Macromedia recently got bought out by Adobe (the makers of Photoshop and Illustrator), so the product you are looking for is now called "Adobe Flash". You can download a 30 day trial from their website:

However I must warn you in advance. To get anywhere in Flash - especially with creating games - you will need to learn Flash's internal programming language, which is called "Actionscript". I have been using Flash for 8 years now and I'm still getting to grips with Actionscript. Its an ever-evolving language that is similar in many ways to Javascript, but its recently changed into an "Object Orientated" programming method so has become more complex.

If you commit yourself to learning Flash and Actionscript it can be extremely rewarding - you can create games, funky animations and extremely cool websites. But its not easy at first and it will take some commitment. I highly recommend it though if you have the patience to learn.

Best of luck with it!

Well, the standard for this, is Flash. It is, however expensive, but, if you are in education, you get a discount. It is made by Adobe, and there is a trial version of it available, and there are books for making flash games.
