As far as popularity, they don't. As far as influence, they rate almost as much as any other... for musicians, anyhow.

To the people who say they weren't a "real band", I have a statement, and then a question:
They wrote their own music (Boys 2 Men, Backstreet, N'Synch, etc don't);
They play their own instruments (None of the boy bands do);
They recorded their own CD's (there were actually TWO real ones... and how many "real" bands don't even get this far?);
They toured (only for a month, and only in MAJOR cities, yet they toured) and played on TV (how many "real" bands don't get this far?);
They had a recording contract, merchandise, videos, etc. when most "real bands don't.

Question: What is not "real" about that? They were a manufactured band, put out specifically for the purpose of making money, and with no real other purpose. For this, they aren't a real band, yet Boys 2 Men, New Edition, Backstreet Boys, The Monkeys, The Pussycat Dolls, Spice Girls, and many others were put together for the sole purpose of making money, and no other reason, yet they are all considered "real bands" by the masses.

If you want to know how they rate as far as influence, ask any working musician who has ever toured, recorded a CD/album/tape, etc. what they think.

Spinal Tap is not and was never a real band..
It was a spoof made up from different stories from the road ...making a parody of bands such as Iron Maiden and Motorhead..

It made for a classically funny movie...

For the 60s, closer to Jerry and the Pacemakers or Freddy and the Dreamers

For the 70s, more aligned with Attila and the Regis St. Clair Project.

They never really got a breakout hit to put them over the top (although they really caught on in Japan)
