If you don't know the man in question well enough to make an informed choice, you can always go with tools (power or hand), or gadgets (mechanical or electronic).

I'm not a man, but I am a wife and in my experience this depends on the man. What are his interests? Does he have a hobby? someone who likes to work with wood or gardening might like a gift certificate to an appropriate business. The same would apply to a musician, or collector. But unless you are aware of a particular item, get a receipt so it can be returned. My husband is a collector, a musician, photographer, and builder. This year, as in the past, he ordered his own gifts, but I like to surprise him, so I purchases a Metronome (old fashion) and some old sheet music that he can use to set up still life photos. And both are also related to his music interest.

My interest are writing, Civil War era, forensics, and anything old, especially books. He has given me: a full sized skeleton, a CW era reproduction of a cannon and guns, marshal/sheriff badges, CW bugle--Well you get the idea. Consider the entire person, and his interests are a gigantic part of him.

We generally like stuff such as car related items like a new stereo or maybe an in car dvd player, a new shotgun, a day at a racing track in a supercar, a supercar, pointless gadgets and toys (try the boys stuff website), large supplies of free beer, a dirty weekend away with the other half to name few.
This could just be what i want though!!

I don't mind the smellies, but I don't like getting socks, they're too practical. My wife usually gets me a CD, this year I'm hoping that she gets me the new Paul Weller album.

Big word of advice for all girls out there.
unless you know more about diy than him or he has SPECIFICALLY asked for something, DONT get him tools, they will always be unsuitable for what he needs to do, stick to smellies, electronic toys or music cds etc...
