There is no "right" answer. I have been in bands that only had 3 musicians, and I am currently in a band that has 5.
Lynyrd Skynyrd has 6 (3 guitars, bass, drumms, piano, vocalist). Soft Cell only has 2. (Vocalist, keyboards that do everything). It all depends on what you are doing, and what you need, and what you can find.
Many people will tell you that you need 4 (singer, guitarist, bassist, drums). Others will tell you that you need 5 (add another guitar). Some will tell you that you need a minimum of 3 (no separate lead vocalist). The truth is that you need whatever you have.
I have a friend of mine that is in an acoustic band that has two people in it, and they do almost anything any other band with more musicians can do.
Get what you can, and you will figure out how to do the music you want to do with the band you have.
(hint: it IS possible to do Lynyrd Skynyrd- all six pieces of them- with a three piece band.)

I would think you need 3-4, but four would be a nice number, and it also depends on what kind of band you're trying to start.. like a rock band I would have like 5 or better... a drummer, bass, 2 other guitarist and a singer, but you could have 4 as well.

It really doesn't matter. Anywhere from 2 to 5 people works. A 1 person band isn't that good though.

three. if your lucky, like my band: guitar/lead vocals, bass/second vocals, and then we have a drummer. me being the bass player, i thin too many guitars drown out the bass, bass is important, you need it, just me tho. but also, the more people you have, the harder it is to agree on somthing. we had a vocalist, but we fired him. so, just what you want the band to be
