My pc died and my hard drive was taken out and put into a new box. Everything works fine except I now have no sound - why? Where is the sound card stored, is it in the hard drive or is it in the actual box? I am totally pc ignorant.......

its in the box, attached to the mother board...look on the back of the pc and where you plug the speakers into....that is the outside part of the sound card...most likely you dont have the right drive installed for the sound card...

It is possible that the new box does not have a sound card built into the motherboard, best way to confirm is, are there any connections for your speakers and microphone to plug into, are they within the group of connections at the rear of your PC? if there are then you may need to activate the sound-card, this may have to be done in the bios settings, or/and within windows control panel. If the plugs are separate from the group of connections at the rear of your PC near connection for you monitor, on a separate PCI card it may be you need to install the drivers, you may need to remove the card to find out the make and model, be sure to turn off the computer before removing or installing any cards. The other option is that you have two sound cards, one with motherboard, one stand alone PCI installed, check to see if there is another set of connectors where speakers and microphone can be installed, it may be you are connecting to the wrong connections. Perhaps best if you can talk to person who supplied the new "box" and ask them to assist you

The sound card is inside the pc tower and not on the hard drive. You need to go into device manager and troubleshoot your sound device.

Try checking to see if you still, have any software for that sound card installed on the computer. Start>Control Panel, try checking if there is anything that relates to sound. Also, maybe your volume control is muted.

You probably fried part of your motherboard. Try reinstalling the drivers for the sound card.

sound cards usually are inbuilt in mother boards and all you will need to do is reload the drivers for your soundcard that came with the new box.
