Interesting question.

In Las Vegas it depends a lot on whether the person had a family there, had a "regular" job, and the circumstances of the death.
Example, One person I knew took a dive off the Show Boat. He was living at a cousins house in Las Vegas, even so, the event did not make the newspaper. Las Vegas does not "make news" of suicides or many other types of deaths of indeterminate causes. His obit was one line about a month after the fact because there finally was a funeral.

Another who possibly died secondary to OD never made the news or obits. The city cremated him and took no effort finding "next of kin". They were even told they could find family info from hospital records from a year before but didn't. A brother of his happened to be casually looking for him, and called me about a week after the fact.

I knew this person because he had done odd jobs for me from time to time.

Look in all the places people have suggested but you will have to persevere. Records people will not put a lot of effort helping you with your search!

Library, newspapers. To begin. Follow a trail from there. The internet is good but sometimes it's best to look into hard written records. Death record are not sealed in most places. It may also help if you know a police officer~ it's an idea.

view Nevada newspaper archives (at the library or online) for the obituary to find out details of the person's life, including how they died, and who survived them. search for any living relatives. they might welcome the chance to speak to you about that person and commemorate their life. it would be hard b/c it was so long ago but you may also be able to obtain a copy of the death certificate through the state.
