I've read an awful lot over the years, though mostly non-fiction. Some of my favorite fiction writing:

Almost anything by Joseph Conrad
Some of Mark Twain's earlier works are entertaining, his more mature works and some smaller pieces can be rather dark, cynical, or depressing
I love "Lake Wobegon Days" by Garrison Keillor
I like Rudyard Kipling's works, at least partly because of the historical context in which he wrote and the local color he injected
Stories by William Faulkner

I did a search on "best novels of all time" and got quite a few hits. Try the links below. I don't always agree with some of these choices, but they're good starting points.

May want to give more details...Is this for a school project? If so I always liked Silas Marner. It is a good study for English Lit class and also is quite a good story about an old hermit who suddenly finds a baby on his doorstep and raises it as his own.

There is an awesome series by a guy named Ted Dekker. They are called (in order of how to read them) (1) Black, (2) Red, and (3) White. They are pretty captivating... A guy who is either living two lives or seriously hallucinating... Very thought provoking and with a positive message. Check them out!!! You'll like them!!! ♥
