Yes, they cost a very small amount for each, but you can also get a plan where you have almost unlimited for about $5 per month.

It's free only to other Verizon Wireless users if you purchase one of the txt bundles. Smallest bundle (500 msgs) costs $10/mo.
If you go over the limit or choose not to subscribe to a txt bundle, it's 10c to send or receive domestically. Internationally it's 10c to receive, 25c to send.

With Verizon its free with you send to other VERIZON people but when you send to other carriers you got to subscribe to a package, I believe. Call them by dialiing *611 its free to call.
