Both overly expressive and "dead pan" looks can put people off. But having facial and body language that match your words makes one more believable and potentially trusted. (helps others laugh at your jokes too).

(However if one is a card player or Gambler, you may want to preserve this look, otherswise read on)

Yes, you can do this. Pick two or three expressions you would like to improve, (laughter, empathy, etc)

Watch TV, friends, movies for good role models.

Practice that expression in front of a mirror. Try over doing it, and under doing it till you find something you feel is you.

Then do it in front of a video camera, while reading or watching something that should evoke that look, (no mirror giving feedback) then play it back, repeat until you have it.

Move on to a different expression.

Include a close, trusted confidant after you feel that you have it down. try it on them.

make it a priority to use it while alone and with friends for about 30 days.

Remember, you are trying to appear sincere by facially expressing your thoughts and helping others see you as you are, nothing else.

Yes. you can teach yourself- basically you can teach yourself tons of things that you wish to learn. try to search through the net for other practical ideas and advices. the other answerers are also right in saying that you can use a mirror. the mirror is good to reflect and guide you in the control of your expressions. in fact, the eyes can also play up a lot of emotions; from angry slit eyes to dreamy eyes. if you take drama classes, you can also learn a lot of useful tips too.
