This is very juvenile behavior. " But mommy Joey spilled the sugar." It is a childish attempt to distract from the persons mistakes by directing the "het" to someone else. Or to make this person's misdeeds seem less by pointing out that others have made bigger mistakes.

Stop your session with this employee Tell this employee, very clerly, that you really don't care what so and so has done this meeting is about what this employee has done. AND tell this employee if he/she wishes to complain about someone else they should see you later about that item specicically. Then, resume the sessoin about this employee, go on and talking about what this employee has done. YOU run the discussion. It is not a chat session.

Point is let this employee know tht you are not going to be redirected! Let them know you will not stand for this behavior by not allowing it. You are in charge.

AND it is 4 weeks before Christmas. You might hate yourself if you let this perosn go. It could also hurt morale.

Another suggestion. Get Sneaky. HIde and watch this person. See why others don't like working with him/her. It could be a jealousy thing of some sort, or any number of things NOT job preformance related. BUt it could be that when yo uare not looking this person is relly slacking! It is your job to find out the facts. Firing someone is a terrible thing to do! You just don't let someone go unless you are really certain.

Write down every complaint that the staff makes (date, time, incident, etc), this way they can't come back on you for firing them. If they are within their probation you can fire them for looking at you/anyone the wrong way. If they're past their probation and screwing up when you're not around, don't worry, they will forsure do something wrong infront of you sooner or later.

Handle them VERY carefully. Sounds like you're the manager, so naturally they'll tend to behave the most around you.
I once yelled at this one particular employee--after the fact, she went to another manager and accused me of saying something sexist to her during my yelling session...which was NOT true.
Boy, I have never wanted to murder someone MORE in my life!

Sounds to me like you should get rid of this person...you're the boss and what you say should go...no arguements about it!
