Graphic design/Graphic art involves web design, magazine & newspaper ads, brochures, billboards, product labels, book design, etc. Forgive me if I've left anything out...

But basically, it's any type of art that is designed for mass consumption, often by a team, as opposed to creating a single piece of art for oneself.

When people speak of graphic art, they are generally speaking about it intrinsically, meaning the beauty of the art itself. When speak of graphic design, they generally talking about a design using certain rules to sell a product or idea. Graphic art generally doesn't have these limitations.
