In addition to what's already been said...
England was a much better starting point for an invasion than North Africa (where there was still fighting going on).

Because they were already in Italy, having invaded in 1943. The City of Rome was taken by the Allies on 4 June 1944, 2 days before the Normany landings.
Weather, terrain, and a well-planned and executed German defense prolongued the fighting until April 1945.

Although it was harder to reach from England than the Pas de Calais - where the Germans expected them - the Allies realized that it would be worth the extra trouble of going to Normandy because there were fewer Germans there to resist and invasion and the coastal defenses were not complete. Even so, it was a close run thing and could have gone wrong had Hitler allowed the defenders at the invasion beaches to be reinforced as swiftly as his generals wanted.

as Napoleon said an army marches on its stomach, the allies could not supply enough fuel across a channel let alone go around Spain and risk being sunk, additionally they would be forced into attacking Down a limited number of passes and the could be bottled up
why travel that extra distance for no advantage?
look at the fuel and ammunition usage for d ay up to d day plus 90 it amazing
how many 44 gallon drums would that be? how many ships? how many trucks from the port to forward units?they laid a pipe line across the channel and the advance still ran out of fuel
the British navy also could provide artillery support along the coast

Have you seen a geographical map of Europe? It's a much longer slog up through (OR around) the alps than across the lowland countries.
