Baseboard heating can be kind of confusing if you place furniture in front of it make sure it is at least a foot away from the unit, unless the peice of furniture is like a couch with enough space under neath to let air pass underneath it but other wise, space is great.

Not unless you don't want the furniture anymore. I would try to keep it around at least a foot away if possible.

hot water or steam 4-6 inches is fine..Electric baseboard 8 inches

I wouldn't recommend putting anything less than a foot. Placing anything in front of it will diminish it's capabilities for optimal performance.
