You eat a mushroom that is as tall as you and you grow twice as large. There are giant pots that must be at least ten feet high (depending on whether or not you're going by the small Mario or the large) and you have to rescue the princess from a large dragon-like turtle.

Hey, I thought those mario games were great!!

Yes its weird. The storyline was just as bad. Two brothers who worked together(as plumbers) get sucked down a toilet pipe into this new world.
I understand saving the princess, and possibly flowers or mushrooms because its a different world, so those items represent other things.
however i would think that mario and luigi find a way back to their real world, and not stick around to deal with more bad guys and living mushrooms. Even if mario gets laid, wouldnt luigi get sick of being around those love birds?
By the way, ever seen the movie? (Crazzzzy)

Aren't most computer games a bit weird though... Look at Sonic, a hedgehog that runs really fast (hedgehogs are quite slow in real life) collects rings and fights agazinst a fat man called Dr. Robotnik with an orange moustache? If computer games were mundane I don't think they'd be so attractive and addictive. But yeah, whoever created mario must have been on shrooms or something.

You can count me as one of those who think that small and stocky plumbers can save their world and a teen princess from a turtle dragon by racking up points is really weird. The sound and images are near pschedelic and reverberate in the mind for hours, creating a craving for more.
