First try to figure out what kind of television they like to watch. There is an anime style for that. If they like drama's just start playing Monster while they are in the room. If they like action, start up Bleach. If they like movies, pop in Howl's Moving Castle or Steamboy. They wil recognize some of the voices and become intrigued and want to sit and watch it and fall in love. Start (sadly) with a dubbed good quality then ease them into fansubbed anime (YAY!)

Well that involves changing their opinion of art, which usually is impossible, anime as you probably know is much like ketchup on a hot dog,in a sense, you either like it or you dont, it can be very annoting and stupid(at times) yet it can be heart wrenching the next,PERSONNALLY I recomend showing whoevur it is you want to convince ,That you show them ANY MIYAZAKI MOVIES,(you know the guy who made spirited away) Thats how I got my girlfriend hooked, and all my frinds, heck even some of my family, yeah just ask them to watch something along the miyazaki lines,

never push them. just let it flow.
when you and your friend in your living room, have no other plan beside watching movies at home, you may ask them that you want to watch your favourite movie (anime that is).
for first experience of anime, i think it's better to show them an OVA or movies than a series, since movie is only need at much 2 hours to watch from beginning to end, and complete the story.
my recomondations are Spirited Away, Princess Momonoke, or Grave of Fireflies (the last one made my GF drop her tears). all of them are Ghibli Studio/Hayao Miyazaki production.
don't play them ...the movie, like Naruto the movie, Inuyasha the movie, since the characters and story will only be familiar and understood for those who already watch the series.
don't play them children anime. you all may laugh and enjoy it, but if someone don't appreciate the creative mind behind the movie, they only worth it as family movie like disney's or pixar's.
don't play them anime with much gore, sex, and or violence. Blood and Ghost in the Shell are worth watching (for me), but it is not a safe theme for people with various kind of (movie) taste.
i hope you can enjoy animes with your friend

this is a tedious task and you have to be dedicated, I have managed to convert only a few.
first you must understand there intellectual type, if they are a smart person, than make refurances to things that they know alot about, for example an essay connecting serial experiments lain to the philosophy of saint thomas aquinas, however if they are up to par with normal people, find what kind of real life movies they like and set them up with an anime of the same genre, cowboy bebop works best for action types. However if you are dealing with "cartoons are for kids type" set them down and have them watch lain or Neon genesis evangeion. but refuse to answer any of their questions, after all its for kids right?

I start by asking the stuff they like in movies. Then I try to match their likes with an anime. That usually work. I have every one hooked around me even my ex-boyfriends. We do anime parties twice a month now. Also if you think your friend might like you can introduce them to hentai. he! he! he! ^_~

Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell or Cowboy Bebop usually do the trick. But hey, some people just have no taste...

i have the same problem. i think it's getting them to listen to why you think anime is good instead of them automatically assuming that anime and manga is crap(some of my friends do that, although at my particualr school, a high percentage of people like manga). i think that if they listen you should show them some good(funny, romantic, action filled) manga scenes; or anime scenes. maybe that would work. but the biggest part of it is getting them to stop automatically thinking that anime is bad.

u shouldn't try to convince that person, because if u to hang out togather alot and u always watch anime then they'll just grow into it. That's how my friends convince me, that's how I do it to, and trust me IT WORK : )
