If it's for housing benefit then it's the Council, not the DSS, who deal with it.

They will want to see your full bank statement. If you don't provide it, they can refuse to pay benefit.

Benefits agency will need to be sure that your claim is fully supported with evidence on earnings, spending. If you have nothing to hide, why worry ?
The law on money laudering and fraud make this an issue for any public servant.
If your not happy or feel there is a particular wrong here, then you can ask the Data protection office or the Ombudsman to look into it, but you might need to show them what you do not want to show the benefits agency.... darn !!!!!!!
Make a complaint to the office manager or ask to see the complaints policy, that often seems to help.

The DHSS have permission to see any documents they request, in order to prevent Benifit Fraud (where claimants are claiming funds to which they are not entitled).

Although The money may be needed it is not worth being caught as it is a serious offence.

Usually, they just ask for the last 3 months' statements. I have to deal with this every year, too. They like to check if you're still entitled to receive benefits, or if you have too much in savings to qualify for benefits. There is a limit to how much you can have in savings before they stop giving them to you, & they like to see you haven't gone over that.

The DSS have the right to see anything they wish relating to your Bank including full statements. They are a law unto themselves and that comes from a solicitor!
