I saw a guy in the park yesterday using his laptop with no problem. I'm sure he had a wireless card, but how was he able to access the Internet without an ISP or "hotspot" nearby?

To gain access to the internet you must connect through an isp. Perhaps there was a hot-spot nearby. If not, then there are severeal ways you can connect. Nowdays many mobile phones have the possibilty to be used as modems. You can connect your laptop to your mobile phone (via a cable, bluetooth, etc) and get connected to the internet via a dial-up connection. It's as simple as that. Where I'm living, a local phone operator sells wireless modems. They can't be used as stand-alone phones, but you can connect them via an usb cable to your laptop and have acces to the internet. They have many charging facilities (you could be charged for the amount of traffic, for the amount of time, or you can sign-up for a monhly subsciption) so it's very easy and cheap for those who have notebooks to acces the internet from practically everywhere. The mobile modems have an internal lithium-ion battery and it can be charged from the usb bus power of tha notebook. So there's no fear you will run out of battery when you're on the move.

If you want to take the time and get a USB connector for your cell phone...almost anyone can hook up that way.

My son does it the easy way...I got him got a T-Mobile MDA phone with Windows Running on it so he can IM any one on AIM from anywhere in the US. It has a full keyboard. It also has WiFi!

I almost forgot, don't forget to surf eBay for a 2G Mini SD Memory Card so you can fill it up with MP3's!

Check out the link below: (Cingular has the same phone--different name.)

You piggy-back with someone that is already on the net with wireless service. Anyone with a wireless card in their computer can do it.
