I'm going to my first Christmas do next week and I've been told we have to get a £1 most useful gift. I don't really get it, but any ideas for what I could get? Don't want the obvious (already dismissed idea of a bottle opener, condoms, earplugs etc.). They are all teachers by the way.

A roll of sellotape and a pen, both are very useful, you can never have enough sellotape and you always need a pen.

earmuffs, I received ear muffs many years ago at a gift for under 1 and they are still to this day my favorite. My ears get cold in winter. Hated the gift when I got it, but once I used it, it was very good. Also make sure it is a bright color.

Most important would b a winning lottery ticket. Otherwise, a bunch of use-n-throw pens'd b useful. A second-hand radio or any little containers might be of extensive use.
