No, it has more to do with the history of science fiction than anything else.
Science Fiction/Fantasy was never considered "reputable", so if you were reading pulp magazines in the 40's or 50's (actually it goes back to the 20's), rather than traditional "novels", then you were seen as a kind of oddball.
Enter Star Trek and Star Wars in the 60's and 70's to bring Sci Fi mainstream. The followings outgrew what could be considered a "cult" following, but it still wasn't accepted by "intellectuals".
Only a very few books ever crossed the threshold into accepted literature, and they are the same books everyone reads in school. And not one of them is less than 40 years old. 1984, Brave New World, some Jules Verne, some Bradbury...
Not only are sci-fi and fantasy not considered real literature, sci-fi and fantasy films are not considered drama for the same reason. Only one sci-fi/fantasy movie ever to win best picture, Return of the King. Wizard of Oz (almost 70 years ago), ET, Star Wars, all lost. All others before Lord of the Rings didn't even get nominated.
That, and when stuff gets media coverage, it centers on people dressed as Klingons, or Spock, or it's a story about people waiting a week in front of a movie theatre, all the while dressed as Princess Leia, or Darth Maul. So the stereotype gets perpetuated.

You are only called a Geek if you are into it too much as in going to Sci Fi conventions. Unfortunately many people who are into it are stereotypical nerds therefore the association is there. If sports stars went to SCI FI conventions then it would not be a geek issue.. Live Long and Prosper & bring back Fire Fly!..Closet Geek...

I have been involved with Science Fiction and Fantasy since I was a little baby. I also grew up watching the "Star Wars" movies as well as the "Star Trek" series and movies. Science Fiction and Fantasy is definitely where the money is in the box office.

Its like this people who are smart get called geeks because people who are stupid are gelouse so they try to demine and belittle them, studies have shown that the majority of star wars and star trek fans are really smart, so they got generalized, smart people are geeks most star wars fans are smart so they are geeks, after this became well esablished being a fan made people asume you are samrt and call you a geek even if you are an idiot.

well i dont like star trek because its the same old story over and over again and the acting is wooden. i am not a big fan of star wars because its a sellout scene. And the reason people get called geeks is because how many people do you see dressing up as film characters when the go to see horror films etc.. not many... thats why because people should be old enough to stop playing with lightsabres etc... thats sad...

i don't think it's the people who merely watch these that are geeks. it's the people that are obsessed, center their lives around it and make reference to them constantly to compare to every day life. i've seen all star wars. i've seen all of TNG, DS9, all the star trek movies and all of Enterprise. (not a fan of Voyager) but i could care less about them, really.

I LOVE STAR WARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i get called a geek all the time, jst for saying Hayden is hot. i also get called a geek for loving harrison ford. GO HAN SOLO!!!
i guess because those movies are confusing to some of the weak minded(*cough*cough*).. so since we understand them, they call us geeks... that's the real reason
