Synthesis chemical reactions are reactions that follow the form

A + B --> AB

The idea is that you are combine two reactants to form one product. It's a synthesis reaction because the product is formed from smaller pieces. This is different from a reaction like

A + B --> C + D

as in the synthesis reaction clearly the "reactants" form more than one product.
