I live in Germany and my company wants to send a case of wine to a customer in California for Christmas? Is that possible? We would have to pay import duties of course, but my question is if it can legally be done? Does one need a permit or something. We have heard in passing that it is really difficult to do. Any help would be appreciated.

It will be a huge hassle - far more trouble than it's worth.

Here's a discussion I found: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threadselect.jsp?fid=2&tid=34832622

You're much better off finding an online shop in the U.S. and ordering it from there - although some states forbid interstate shipments of alcoholic beverages as well.

It is LEGAL to import wine to California. You might end up paying customs duty, and when I investigated it for my case (I live in NY), I could not find the exact numbers (BTW, I ended up without paying any duties, although it was about 40 bottles).

If company pays for everything, why dont' you try using DHL (or UPS if you prefer a US company) and they'll take care of custom clearance (unless they don't want to ship your wine).

Call UPS or DHL and ask them. Or maybe the Post.
