The kind of people that ride horses are not concerned with logic.

Why is it such a pain? A hand is 4 inches. The actual height is converted back into hands.

Even more strange is it is not height to the top of the horse's head.

Anyway, that's the way it has always been.

old way of weasuring before tapes were invented and a six foot ruler was slightly awkward to carry in the pocket.

No its not.

When tape measures were rare and expensive, hands were in fairly convenient supply.
