I'm not talking about beating the hell out of children, but parents smacking their own as a form of discipline. What right have the govornment, a bunch of Social Workers, and so called child protection organisations got to interfere in how parents bring up their own flesh and blood?? Isnt it simply imposing their own ideology on something that should have nothing to do with them? Nanny State/Big Brother gone too far?

AND if you personally do not beleive in smacking your own kids, do you think your views should be "imposed by law" on other parents?

I think a smack will teach them that for every wrong doing there is a punishment and it only gets worse. If we stopped doing this time-out crap we would have more respectful children. Look at the young adults from the time-out era. Most don't care about how others are treated and they act real stupid when they get busted for something illegal " What did I do?"

This is quite tricky. But yes I think you should be allowed or at the very least, not banned. Sometimes a good smack on the bottom for a small child is needed for them to face the reality of the situation, also a good smack on the side of your teen sons head is often a great wake up call, as is a nice little hair toss for the princess daughter! There is a fine line between beatings for beatings and beatings for acceptable behavior therapy. It's all a matter of choice here.

spare the rod spoil the child.
there's still truth in that statement.
a smack when they're children, is better than trying 2 chastise an out-of-control and lacking any discipline, teenager.
i would consider a lack of discipline in a teenager, the side-effect of bad parenting.
i think it's another 1 of those trying 2 stamp out child abuse has had a knock-on-affect on good parents.
i smacked my daughter, only when all other forms of discipline had failed, a smack or 2 when she was a toddler meant smacking was abandoned by the time she was 4.
i never smacked her again.

i dislike anybody saying u cannot smack ur own child, lack of discipline is the reason we have so many out-of-control teenagers, now!

I think the whole world has gone mad there is no freedom anymore banning amoking in public for one it is eah persons own choice to live the life they choose not the government.

I believe that smacking should be allowed but only to a certain extent and only on the bum i used to be smacked as a child it's not done me any problems and made me scared of my mum i wouldn't dare do anything to upset her! Lol. I love my mum to bits i had a very good upbringing and i know what is right and what's wrong i don't think it does any damage but beating your child is a completly different story!

As i say thought too many people getting involved in our own lives im sure this isn't how the big man intended things to be!

Smacking their children should be up to the parents and nothing whatsoever to do with the government. I am not saying beat your child but a short, sharp smack never hurt anybody. So no I don't think it should be banned.

YES BAN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean why does anyone have the right to hit their kids im sorry but it doesnt wash for me because when does the parent know when enoughs enough i mean it may start with a smack then it may be a punch a kick and so on.

When i was a kid my dad used to beat me up daily for no reason and he would through me about and he broke several bones,

So no dont let parents hit their kids because they will rebel and do what their fathers did and go smacking their girlfriends etc... its a bad example and it doesnt teach them anything...

yes it should! why would you want to hurt you Child? There are many effective forms of punishment that don't require physical pain, and then when you do it your child fears you, they won't want to come to you with any thing in fear that they will be harmed, you may as well say smacking your spouse is fine too. Children need to be taught with speech not pain, all you have to do is get down on their level and use words they understand, it gets thru to them and a time out i believe is more effective than that, they have time to dwell on what they did was wrong and why

My daughter will get smacked-but she is always forewarned first-i.e. Stop that now. If you do that again, you will get a smack. If she carries on,I wordlessly walk over to her and give her a smack on the bottom. 9 times out of 10,I don't have to-but it is sometimes required. I don't smack hard enough to cause any pain-it's the indignity to her. It is required at times-and the government isn't raising my daughter-I am. So I am the one that knows the best course of action.

I am going to sit on the fence on this one, i personally dont condone smackig infants on any level, however that it the point in being a parent, you do what is right by your child. The thing that annoys me is there is so much emphasis on parents smacking thier children, when in actual fact, there are parents who are far worse at raising children and they are allowed to continue! Perhaps we need to be looking at the more severe cases before we punish a mother/father for slapping a childs legs when there naughty! x
