i moved to berlin 2 1/2 yrs ago expecting to stay 6 months or so and i've just sold my house in the uk!!
berlin is a fab city, some amazing pieces of architecture and phenomenal memorials (my fave is the soviet memorial in treptow park, takes your breath away), the history behind the city is facinating - both ww2 and cold war. the nightlife is superb. the public transport system is cheap, easy to use and very reliable.be warned tho - the footprint of the city is 12 times that of paris and you'll never see it all in one day!
it's not a city you fall in love with immediately - it doesn't have the initial impact of say paris or barcelona and it can still feel quite fragmented despite the wall being down for 16 years. however, berlin is a grower and i've yet to have a visitor who hasn't booked to come back!
the christmas markets here are quite magical and it's a very child friendly city with regards to kids in restaurants etc. make a little effort with your pleases and thank you's in german and language isn't an issue.
get a good guide book, plan what you'd really like to see and take a good pair of walking shoes!
need any tips, do mail me!

I just visited Berlin in September and was very much surprised by how much i enjoyed it, Berlin is a fascinating place so full of History, and the history is so recent! If you go I would recommend Brewer's Walking tour, (I thinks that's what its called) I went on the 8 hours one, sounds long I know, but it was totally worth it. I learned more WW2 and the GDR than I ever did in school. It never seemed long and I got more out of the city in one day than I think I could have wandering around on my own in a week! Also if you are on a budget I would recommend Circus Hostels, very nice, very cheap.

Berlin is an amazing place but you must brush up on your history of Germany before you go otherwise none of the amazing places, stories, monuments and building will have little meaning to you.
I have always found the Germans very welcoming as well, even more so if you learn a little German.
Stay int he centre somewhere as the metro system closes quiet early.
Take a bike tour through FAT TYRE bike co, its amazing and there guides are really helpful.
Walking tours are also great as they give you a quick history lesson and tell you things and take you places you otherwise wouldn't think to go.

Have been to Berlin. It's a fascinating city (especially since the Wall came down). There is so much to and see. Try a visit to the Fenestrum and Olympic Stadium. Try to stay away from the Golden Angel at night. It's a grand sight but at night the Ladies of Negotiable Virtue hang out there. If you do go Enjoy yourself. I did

I was a foreign exchange student in Germany 2 years ago. I absolutely HATED Berlin. Almost every person I met gave me dirty looks or were just down right RUDE. For example, we didn't have "exact change" at a restaurant and the waitress flipped out on us, we had enough money just not the tiny amounts of euro because we had JUST gotten there. It was a bad first day of exchange that's for sure. The bathroom ladies at "Park Inn" weren't very nice either.

I'm happy I was only there a few days, majority of my time was spent with my hostfamily in their house in Dresden, which is a lovely city and everyone I met was extremely nice.

Unfortuneatly Berlin lacks much of the architectural heritage associated with European cities due to the heavy bombing of WWII. It's still a wonderful city with a lot to do. It's generally open and clean, with many parks and tourist attractions. The quality of the museums is very high, I especially enjoyed the Pergamum museum. Overall, it reminds me a bit of Manhatten.

I live in Berlin. It's great. Lots of interesting architecture, great museums for every taste, cheap dining, reasonable hotels, excellent public transport network. I highly recommend a visit. Especially now, during the Christmas market season.

What are you looking for? I live here but Im only 16. I guess it is nice for tourists in the city center but otherwise it is kinda wierd. Im lucky enough to live in Steglitz which is really nice but there are places that are dumpy. A girl in my school got raped in Schönefeld. But to visit and stay in the designated areas it is ok. I think for an American it is good for parties( it was for all of my friends who visited) but for British people I dont really know. I dont really understand British people.........
