There are 192 members of the United Nations, so there are at least 192 countries. However, apart from these members, there are also Vatican City (which is independent and chosen not to become a member of the UN) and Taiwan (which is recognised world-wide as a country, but is not a member of the UN because China claims it as a province). So the total is 194.

Note: there are dozens of territories and colonies that are sometimes erroneously called "countries" but don't count at all - they're governed by other countries. Places commonly confused as being countries include Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Greenland, Palestine, Western Sahara, and even the components of the United Kingdom (such as Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England - sorry, they're not countries, states, or nation-states).

According to the US State Department, there are 193 countries in the world, plus Taiwan which is not considered an independent country by anyone so as not to make China mad.

Note: Andorra, Lichtenstein, San Marino ARE members of the UN according to www.un.org, the UN official webpage.
