Compacted gravel will not make that much noise
and you want compacted gravel to fix ruts or holes
in the driveway.

If you put down a compacted gravel (21AA & 6A mix)
and then put a loose crushed gravel (with NO binder)
over top that will give you the stability, plus also offer
a "noise" to approaching cars or people.

Kids will be kids and they will throw some stone, the
compacted stone will harden up like concrete, so the
kids can't get at that; but the loose stone they can.

I suggest looking for a 31A (w/ no binder) it is about
an 1/8" of inch crushed stone, it makes a nice top
coating, it will give you the sound of approaching people
and cars and it is so small that the kids throwing it will
not effect anyone to much. Not even lawn mowers or windows.

It probably does deter burglars... but I guess if the burglar was determined enough, he'd find another way round. Like through your garden or something.

There's another good point on here - you'll find if the milkman / paperboy / postman comes early (in the case of the postman... unlikely) you will never want to sleep with the window open if it's hot. The crunch, crunch noise will irritate you like never before. Speaking from previous experience here.

Professional theives are usually opportunist - they will break into properties where they believe people are out and they can get in, out, and away easily. If you are out, unless you have nosy neighbours, then no one will take any notice of the crunching gravel. But you may find it useful if you are in to hear people approaching. And it may deter burglars who are unsure if you are in or out.

depend on what your local kids are like, round where i live i would say both are true! however a burglar is more likley to break into a house where he can be totaly silent whilst aproaching the property then he is where hes gonna make a load of noise

I didn't have any gravel so I used broken bottles (this also stopped the local kids throwing it)

there are two types of buglar; the pro and the opportunist.
the pro will only be detered by really good security locks.
the opportunist will be deterred by dogs, anti climb obstacles and anything that might get him caught, like noisey path, if the path is overlooked by nerighbours

No, but it WILL freak you out at night and make you shoot the paper boy. What makes you think a burglar would stay on the path anyway????
