He was faking insanity to get into the mental hospital. He was in prison and started to pretend he was nuts so that theyd send him to the feed farm. He figured it was easier than prison so hed just serve the rest of his time out in relative luxury.
As far as i can see theres nothing wrong with him. Hes a little socially maladjusted in terms of starting fights in bars when hes drunk or sleeping with underage girls(he claims she looked like she was 25!). Macmurphy is really a metaphor for the rebellious side of people. The mental hospital is the world and the patients are the people who are being told what to do and when to do it. Macmurphy is the maveric who doesnt blindly accept the rules and who doesnt just do what hes told.....

I always assumed he was in the asylum for loudly and blatantly "thumbing his nose" at mainstream society, for not behaving as a person considered to be" normal" at that time would act. I also, always assumed he was a heavy drinker, maybe even a drug user, causing him to act even "nuttier" and more outlandishly when he was buzzed.
Since he didn't fit the mold of the 1950's/early 60's American they just locked him up, because they didn't know what else to do w/ him. I think Ken Kesey seems to be commenting on how the conservative establishment of the time treated people who were a little eccentric, or acted differently from the average, crew cut wearing, row house owning "normal, upstanding good American Citizen". This is JMO so you might want to look in the book, it probably gives a more detailed explanation and better insight into what his problems were. Maybe even try Cliff's Notes. Good luck w/ your paper. Cuckoo's nest is one of my favorite movies so if u have anymore questions u can e me (my address is at the end of my interests).

The whole point of the story is about the incompetence and abusiveness in the mental health industry. As a vehicle to demonstrate this, they put a non-insane person in an asylum (McMurphy was just looking for what he thought would be an easy place to spend his prison sentence) and show how the institution tries to mold him into a crazy person. When they fail, they administer electric shock therapy until they fry his brain and now he fits their mold.

i agree with a lot of ppl
who feel society's rules arent always fair or
even rational
but the fact he didn know a mental hosp coud keep
him indefinitly may show a lack of common
intuition
