It goes without saying that to get a job as a programmer, you need to know how to program. The very idea that you can waltz into an industry so easily is insulting to all the programmers out there who have put in years of hard work to get to the position they are at now.

I have no experience riding horses - I wouldn't expect to be given a job as a jockey on the strength of the fact that I simply like the idea.

what kind of question is that? if you are 36, you should know the answer to that. Do you have SAP experience? Can you demonstrate the skills if I gave you a lab? Most programming jobs require applicants to take a test to see what they know.

No. SAP is almost a database - system application programme .
The one of the application of DBMS is SAP. SAP is used for system design, flowchart design ,application design and so on .In the background of sap, particularly Oracle product is running. So, if you don't know PL/SQL then you can not be a good SAP programmer .So learn first
DBMS (atleast PL/SQL ).If you serious .then to learn DBMS deeply you need alover 3 months & to learn SQL you may spend 20 days. And for PL/SQL , it's almost take 1 month. And to know oracle (it is not neccessary ) it allabout 4 months. After that learning SAP , become very easy & it is a course of 5-6 months. There are many institute (even online) of SAP in your locality.

Some books of DBMS are ::- "Database system design " by korth, "Database system analysis " by navate etc.
Books on Oracle are "Complete reference on Oracle " from
Mcgrew-Hill etc.
Book on SAP are --- "Job Scheduling for SAP"
by Kees Verruijt, Arnoud Roebers, and Anjo de Heus and
ABAP Development for SAP BW - User Exits and BAdIs etc.

You'd have to learn SAP in a certified course program.

Even then, you could expect lack of experience a handicap. You'd probably have to have reduced salary expectations for your first job.
