The term barbarian has been used in history to denote Mongols and also Huns.

Mongols were so treacherous in their dealings that whenever a child was born in their family... it was dipped from three to five minutes in water just to see whether the child survived. The stronger one those survived were permitted to live and others perished on their own. Those drowned were butchered on the altar of fate.

It was a horrible tradition... a practice that was abhorred then by the civilized society and also now. Mongols were ruthless in their dealings even with mankind. Most of their dealings were not related to logistics and prevalent laws of nature. They make their own man-made laws favorable to them.

Once the Mongols decided to banish all the cats in the region! Do you know what they did with them? They put every cat in a bowel of warm water so that they died with dignity. Such were the practices of the Mongols.

Mongols were expert in warfare. They indulged in warfare far and wide and captured large regions where they plundered and destroyed most things that did not suit their culture, whims and fancies.

Mongols are the most hated community of the world in the history of mankind. More here- http://www.godrealized.org/

I'm not too sure what you are after, but if you want to know who the barbarians are/were, it's a Greek word for people with a language they could not understand, they kept hearing "barr, barr, barr," so they called these people barbarians. In Greek it sounds like "Barrbarroy". The Greeks were very proud of their civilization, pretty much like Americans today, and so the word also meant "uncivilized people". And since they were in constant war with the surrounding nations, it also came to mean "agressive uncivilized people", although they were not worse than the Greeks themselves.
And as the word got taken over into other languages, that was the meaning that went with it.

By the way, it's "Who...", not "whom" in your question.

Barbarian is a word the ancient Greeks gave to anyone who wasn't Greek. The word is flung around far too much these days. And just what do you have against the Mongolians?

The barbarians were old inhabitants of Europe at the time of the Roman Empire. They occupied what is known today as Germany and that part of Europe and were known as such because they did not have such an established government and/or religion.

Barbarians, surrounded by romans as they were (see Gladiator, first battle) attacked and penetrated the Roman empire in several times and were known as fierce warriors. One of the most famous kings was Atila.
