As stated above, scrubs are the pajama type clothes that are worn by medical professionals. Originally, they were only worn in areas that required "scrubbing in", such as the OR, but because of ease of care, and comfort they have been adopted by almost all areas of medical care.

Traditionally for the coats, there is a subtle distinction that signifies rank in their design. This has also blurred some with the changing of the uniform for medical care. Doctors wear long white lab coats. They have their name sewn on the left chest, along with their staff position, if in a hospital and sometimes the hospital logo. Affiliated licensed medical professionals wear short white coats, again with their name and position sewn on. (pharmacists, nurses, etc) Non licensed medical professionals wear blue lab coats, usually without a name, although some people of rank may have a name and position on theirs. The distinction between long is short for these people usually is determined by their duties, rather than rank on the hierarchy scale.

These are no longer hard and fast rules, as some nurses wear longer coats and some doctors prefer a shorter coat. Pharmacists that compound IV fluids and other drugs often wear longer coats, and sometimes blue, to protect their clothing from the chemicals they use.

Take it from someone who wears them to work everyday. They are the uniform nurses and yes some doctors wear. They are usually depicted as all white in movies and on TV. The coat worn by the doctors is actually called a lab coat.
