For online train reservation please visit http://www.irctc.co.in For reserving your tickets, you are required to register here and is simple. Then you can book your ticket online by checking the availability through the same website by doing online transaction by providing your valid identity (like DL, PAN card, etc). And can take a printout of the booked ticket.
You can even cnacel the booked ticket and the amount will be returned to the same account within 2 days

You need to create an account , then you can book tickets online, to be delivered anywhere in India.
Also www.indianrail.gov.in provides you the details of trains and availability of seats.
