Let me start by saying that I love America. It is the greatest country on earth in my opinion. However recently I've started to realise that some of the most basic facets of our society are based on lies.

I'm speaking mainly of our monetary system. Our dollar (along with most other monies in the world) is not backed by anything except for the governments "good" word.

Since this item which each and everyone of us works for and uses everyday has no true value and is itself a propagation of lie, is it any wonder that lieing is condoned and even encouraged in our society.

I write this after testifying as an expert witness in a trial where a mortgage broker, lied, cheated and stole over $2 million dollars from poor families in the midwest. This man was a success by our societal standards, and I doubt he ever had a troubled nights sleep. He feels no remorse for his actions. In our world he is viewed as a winner.

When did decency go out of style?

We as a culture are plastic, we've abandoned the values that made this country great and instead have gone for the cheap thrill, false success and instant gratification.

Help me understand how this happened.

It didn't go out of style.. The simple fact is that MANY people suck. They have no character, no respect for others, and if we shoot them, and get caught, we go to jail. Another fact, is there are MANY good people out there too. Just don't look for one at a mortgage company.

Decency went out of style when there were two people on the planet. We could go back to the Gold system if you think our money should be backed by something solid - but I don't see any point in that - Gold is only valued mainly because its pretty. Good Luck in finding your Utopia!!!

I don't agree that America is the greatest country on earth. I think that it is the most plastic nation on earth. To make it the greatest nation on earth would require that everyone would like to go there and I don't believe everyone would. That aside I believe that it could be the greatest nation by being tolerant of its own...is it?? Look at the violence which occurs after a disaster....the folks who pillage and loot for food because there is nothing in place to supply the basics....the folks basically feed off each other... its appalling...there should be something in place...if America wants to be seen as truly great then it needs to support and nurture its own first... no race only Americans....not African Americans...not Latin Americans...not Indian Americans....but Americans....do that and America can be truly a great nation.....

I like America but I don't like what I see there when all goes to hell...

"Bring us your poor and your unwanted" seems to have changed to "Doors closed till further notice".....

Decency exists....it needs to be nurtured not glorified....

Though I understand that you are disgusted with this person, even if we were still on the gold standard, I don't think that would have made a difference to someone with an aptitude for theft and deception. Rest assured that that evil only triumphs when good people do nothing. If you really want him to be punished, cry it out to everyone you meet and get into his face.

I will ring your doorbell and run away!!!

My dear, decency was never in style, to begin with! We live in an unscrupulous world and I am equally disillusioned as you are!
