because the donuts hole is the best part of the donut! And you can get a dozen of holes in one little bag and they are easier to eat =-) and bite sized! YUMMY I love donut holes

its funny you should ask just the other night they were discussing this on the food network they said some sailor was eating something like a donut and was trying to steer the boat but was having trouble holding both so he put the donut onto one of the knobs(i guess we can call it that???)on the wheel so he could free up his hand if you got to foodnetwork.com you may be able to find out more info i hope this make sense its kind of weird to explain

So the donut is cooked evenly, meaning so the donut isn't mushy on the inside and really crispy on the outside.

Due to the nature of the dough they will be too done on the outside by the time the center cooks. So you don't have a center and they cook evenly and quickly.

if i rember it right theare baked on a spit in a row in order to increase space effieciency in the oven.
