Good Day!

I am a Filipino college student and I'm currently taking up Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. I am planning to take up my master's and doctor's degree in Stanford university. I would like to ask the requirements to be completed for me to be admitted in the said university. Would it be difficult for me to be admitted with the fact that I came from a Philippine school? If it would be difficult, what school will recommend? Thanks.

You need to look at the Stanford website.

You also need to realize that Stanford is one of the most famous universities in the USA. They get many, many applicants for each position. So you need to be one of the best students in the world to get in there.

Maybe you are not that good. OK, so then you should realize that there are over 4000 college campuses in the USA. Stanford is not the only one!!!

Do some research about what other schools have areas of study that you are interested in. I think your best chance at finding a school is to look through the scientific research for some articles that are about scientific areas you want to work with. Then check where the authors of those article are professors. Then personally write to those professors and see what they think about the possibility of you coming to their school to study! That is a lot better plan than just deciding that you want to be at Stanford, where there may not even be any professor working on the topic you're interested in!

The best thing you can do is to check out their graduate admissions page and get a list of requirements. Most likely they will require the following:

- Transcripts from previous universities (with an official English translation)
- GRE scores
- TOEFL scores
- Recommendations
- Essays and/or Statement of Purpose
- Financial Statement for F-1 visa purposes (you will need a F-1 visa if you are an international student)

Go to their page and/or contact the admissions office for the Biochemistry department and gather this information.

First, the Web site will have the specifics that will also generalize to many other programs elsewhere in the US (GRE scores, transcript, letters of recommendation).

Second, study up on the department and figure out which profs are of interest to you for research.

You will have to write an application essay and in this essay you would want to emphasize which research group is of particular interest to you.

Third, if you know you want a PhD then apply to that program directly. That way you increase your chances of getting funding.
