I had exactly the same problem with them. My daughter lost hers and we had to pay £10 for another sim card. We have no less than 3 contracts with T-mobile and we spend well over £150 a month between them.
They told me that I'd have to pay for another sim card. I felt I had no choice because I wanted to keep the same phone number it's so inconvenient having to change it & let everyone know.
They also said that if I had paid for insurance (which was more than £10 over the year anyway) I wouldn't have had to pay, instead I would have been given a free replacement. Whoopeee Dooo! No Thankyou!
They are in a win/win situation and we always lose- thats the way they seem to operate. Their customer service is awful- you never get the same story twice!
We've been with T-mobile for many years- my sim card still reads One to One(the name of the company T-mobile took over 5 years ago) so that shows how loyal I've been to them.
It is a kick in the teeth when you spend so much money, but If I were you, I wouldn't cancel my contract just yet. I'd pay the £10 now, keep your existing number and then when your current contract expires in 6 months time call them and tell them you are going to give notice and go elsewhere- they will pass you to a specialist team who will do absolutley anything they can to make you stay!
Thats what I just did last week and they bent over backwards trying to keep me. They gave me a £5 a month discount on my tarriff which I re-negotiated anyway and it was better than my last one with more free minutes than I'd use and 500 free texts!
AND I got the discount for a year (£60 in total) and that was on top of a brand-new PDA WITH Sat-Nav (I'm told they never give that away!) blue tooth headset thingy, car charger and case all free of charge under the "U Fix" scheme! Didn't I do well?! Hee Hee.
If you wait till you know you have the upper hand ie your contract is about to expire.. you are a very good customer if you spend £70-£100 every month and you are thinking of taking your business elsewhere I promise you they will give you a much better deal than anyone else. The female I spoke to actually asked me to tell her what they could do for me to make me stay with them! Basically whatever I asked for I got!
Play them at their own game... they can and probably would come after you for the extra money anyway- and lets face it, although it's the principal at stake here, in the grand scheme of things, paying £10 to keep your number and get back to normal isn't the end of the world- get your own back in 6 months and enjoy the feeling of power!
Ooohh I can't wait till the second of our three contracts are about to expire to see what goodies & discounts I can get LOL
BTW... from what I hear, all those mobile phone companies are as bad as eachother.. they promise the earth then don't deliver on customer service!
All the best!

you are just like anyone else that has a strop as soon as they don't get what they want
apart from rights you also have responsibilities, i.e cost of the simcard. the fact that you pay £100 every month its because you are using the service and you are not giving them money for nothing, the fact that you pay your bills on time again... you are supposed to, you are not doing them a favour!
Please go ahead don't pay your bills, i erge you to do it and when the bailiffs come around and pick up your stereo and tv pretend that you are abroad! Oh, and you can forget about having another contract ever again since that will remain on your credit file.
