They are all just as bad for.

What a hypocritical, nanny state we are living in!

HERE, HERE, it pathetic....smokers have it hard enough being social outcasts and having to feel that their habit is unacceptable and dirty....its us smokers that pay a huge amount of tax...without us the country would be in the sh!t...its about time we are thanked for our generosity

It's not a ban, it's a restriction! There will still be plenty of places where smoking is allowed. And I'm sure it won't be long before there are further restrictions placed on the other things you listed. Already there is a congestion charge in London, fireworks are not allowed after 10.30pm, many towns are alcohol-free zones, advertising of junk food is being banned at certain times, etc. But this is all for the benefit of us, and those around us, so quit your whining!

And for the guy who reckons the tax he pays for his smoking habit keeps this country afloat, I think you'll find it doesn't even cover the cost to the NHS treating people with smoking related illnesses.

Cars provide an invaluable economic benefit to society. Alcohol, junk food, and chocolate don't have any negative effects on other people (unless you're drunk driving or causing a ruckus, which is why both are illegal).

Loud music and fireworks should be restricted when they stand a high likelihood of hurting other people (music over 130-140 decibels and fireworks that are improperly stored, or over a certain size, are illegal in the U.S... I don't know about the U.K.).

Since your new smoking law only applies to enclosed public spaces, it's not a ban. It's a restriction.

I split my time between two small cities, one with a public smoking restriction and one without. I greatly prefer the smoke-free bars.

Because in moderation everything you listed is OK. Cars are essential in modern life for getting around. Loud music we could probably do without but it's individuals' choices to go to such places. Alcohol we could do without but there's nothing wrong with a couple of glasses of something now and again, junkfood is yummy and as long as it's not too regularly wont do us too much harm, fireworks aren't neccessary but are fun to watch and probably aren't too bad for our health and chocolate is essential for wellbeing!!!! (in moderation). Smoking is NEVER good for anyone even in small quantities and it ruins non-smokers' lives too. It's selfish and I'm glad of the ban!!

i couldnt disagree with you more...you would have to be living under a rock if you have never heard and understood the literal deadly nature of smoke both first and second hand. all the other things youve mentioned, though with harsh consequences are not socially acceptable as direct killers with unchecked use in public.
though i can certainly appreciate the addictive qualities of cigarettes...your passion to feed your addiction is trumped by my pasison to stay alive with a clean bill of health. at least the electorate felt that way in my state.

I am a non-smoker and don't mind people smoking as long as there is still a non-smoking place in a restaurant. But, I hate it when people light up at bus stops and just as they get off a train and blow their smoke in my face. That is what I find offensive! Never say anything in case they hit me. Not fair.

Banning smoking in public places is a health issue. workers should not be endangered at work. Simple. Can't discriminate and only allow smokers to work. simpler still.

ps I smoke 30 a day and can't wait until the ban as then my garden will be the only temptation

I recently gave up smoking, but not because of the new restrictions because I found out what is actually in a cigarette. Do you realise they put Arsenic in them along with Acetone (nail varnish remover), Ammonia (Cleaning fluids), Cadmium (poisonous metal in batteries), Formaldehyde (Used to preserve dead bodies), Hydrogen cyanide (industrial pollutant)! When they start adding those things to chocolate then I'll give it up!!!

Brave heart do you realise smoking actually makes stress worse? Nicotine is a drug which your body craves so when you get stressed you have a ciggie which feeds your body of its addiction therefore making the next stressful episode even worse!

I smoke and don't drink as a few of my friends and relatives have died through alcohol related illnesses, my wife's gran has just died at 98 and she smoked and was as healthy as anyone, from experience I find that more people die from alcohol related illnesses than smokers, you can drink on trains and aeroplanes and become aggressive and abusive but you can't smoke, smoking helps when you are stressed out it has a soothing effect unlike alcohol.

I think we should ban all those listed. We would be a healthier and more productive nation. You have chosen the listed items because deep down you know none of them are good for you!
The order you have listed them in is good, but I would keep all drivers that are not chaves or wreckless teenagers.
