In school,my Grammar rather vocabulary was pretty good,so according to me,It should be "While you slept, I watched TV".
This sounds more appropriate.Anyways,take care.

while you were sleeping ( past continous) I was watching TV (past continous) this is the correct sentence because both are past continous whereas I watched TV ( fully past) does not match properly and hence though nowadays many people are using, it is not correct english.
