Our sense of humour may take a while to get used to, laughing at ourselves, sarcasm, black humour and satire are common. We can seem like we hate our best friends to outsiders when we use caustic satire and putdowns. There are some words in common use in the US which mean something completely different some should be avoided; Rubber (an eraser) *** (a cigarette) Pants (underwear, usually mens) Bang - Nothing to do with your hair - this is a rather unattractive way in the UK of describing having sex. Fanny - This is the word for a woman's front bits! One doesn't normally talk about anyone's fanny as it is a bit rude. You certainly don't have a fanny pack, or smack people on their fannys - you would get arrested for that! French fries are called chips and potato chips are called crisps. The lift is the elevator and the WC is the water closet or the restrooms, also known as the loo. The link below has a list of words, many of which you will probably not know. You are going to have to wait in a line at some point, it is called a queue. do not jump queues. We are subject to so much American TV, movies and culture that even if you do use a word wrongly, most people will know what you mean, I am sure you will have a great time.
